Crazy Creek Canoe Chair IV

Although marketed as a canoe seat, the Crazy Creek Canoe Chair IV has proven to be an excellent addition to my rowing dory. I was initially unsure how well it would adapt outside of its intended use, but after several outings I’m thoroughly impressed.

From the manufacturer: “The Canoe IV elevates your canoeing experience to new heights. This is our latest evolution of the beloved Canoe III, and it's a premium canoe seat meticulously designed to enhance comfort, durability and convenience both on the water and on shore. Crafted from top-quality waterproof fabrics, the Canoe IV promises unparalleled support and longevity, ensuring you stay comfortable during every adventure. Built to last, this seat is your perfect companion for all your canoeing journeys.”

Comfort and Support:

Rowing places a steady demand on the lower back, and the Crazy Creek chair provides just the right amount of structure without being stiff. The flexible backrest supports my posture while still allowing natural movement during the stroke. It’s kind of strange how well it adapts from simply sitting to really giving er’ the onion while rowing hard. Obviously, the difference in comfort compared to a bare wooden thwart is significant.

Fit and Installation:

Attaching the chair to the dory’s seat was straightforward. The straps cinch securely without interfering with my rowing motion, and the buckles are thoughtfully positioned so they don’t end up under the seat. When not in use, the chair folds nearly flat, which simplifies storage and doesn’t get in the way when loading, covering, or trailering the boat.

Durability and Materials:

The waterproof fabric and drain holes are practical touches for a boat that regularly sees spray and weather. The overall build feels solid and well thought-out, from the stitching to the rigidity of the side straps.

Room for Improvement:

A small gear pocket on the backrest would be useful for items like sunscreen, fishing gear, or snacks. Additionally, the back corners can feel a little high under the arms when twisting, though this has been minor and hasn’t affected my rowing rhythm.

Conclusion:

While designed for canoes, the Crazy Creek Canoe Chair IV adapts seamlessly to a rowing dory or really any flat seat where you can loop an inch-wide cam strap through. It enhances comfort, installs easily and holds up well to the elements. For anyone who rows regularly and values back support (without adding much weight or bulk), this chair is a worthwhile investment.
