Product impressions: The MFC Fly Tying Mat reminds me of my childhood and the occasional TV dinner. A “fully balanced” meal all portioned-out, keeping the turkey gravy off the brownie. It’s about the same size as the placemats I learned geography from too–also, the white background is fantastic. Not only is it white, preferred for ease on a fly tyer’s eyes, but it’s a textured surface so it’s never glaring back at you. Framed by a raised black border, each of the 9 compartments are easy to access and large enough to actually use–and two of them have magnets to help keep magnetic things in place, which is especially handy when vacuuming up the tying carnage. There’s an indented bead sizing situation showing 7 different sizes, as well as a hackle gauge. If that wasn’t enough, there’s a ruler along the bottom: a full 30.48 cm (12-inches).

Did the product fail in any significant way? Of course not, I helped design it.

Does the product live up to its billing? The MFC Fly Tying Mat is a pleasure to use–slip-free, well designed and heavy enough that it doesn’t move while tying. It’s super easy to pick up off the desk to dump into a trashcan without having to taco it. Also, with a bright light above, there is no eye fatigue from glare.

Would you purchase this product yourself? I absolutely would buy this for myself.

Is the product priced for consumer value? At $40 retail, it’s a hard tool to beat for the price–for half the price of a quality pair of scissors, it provides a ton of value at a modest price point.

What kind of angler would value this product? Every fly tyer should have a reason to keep their desk tidy, and this is a great place to start.

What is your favorite fish species? Smallmouth bass are little wet people and should be respected and loved as such.
