RestorLine Fly Line Repair Technology

That was my first question when a few small boxes landed in my mailbox a few weeks ago.

RestorLine makes repair kits for fly lines–products like ReLine (for nicks or cuts in line coating), ReLOOP (for welded loop repair or replacement) and LineSPLICE (for fixing a cut or broken line). Kits are sized for a range of fly lines from 3-10 weight (any type).

Sure, anglers have been cobbling together fixes with off-the-shelf materials for years, but what I like about RestorLine is how simple they’ve made the process and how well their kits fit a wide variety of lines.

Instead of tossing a damaged line, you can patch or splice it, saving money, extending its life, and keeping waste out of the landfill.

My Test

I’d been fishing one of my favorite streamer lines–a Scientific Anglers Sonar Titan 3D Sink I/3/5 with a trashed welded loop for way too long. Could I have cut it back, tied in mono and epoxied a new loop? Sure, but that’s a hassle, and I’m not that good at it.

With RestorLine, I snipped the loop and welded on a new one using their small, temp-rated (120V, 300W) heat gun. It took maybe a minute. My first try was a little short, so I recut and redid it, and it ended up perfect.

I’ve since thrown streamers from a boat for several days, and the loop has held up fine.

RestorLine claims their repairs are actually stronger than factory loops, and so far, I believe it.

What I Like

Saves money and extends fly line life.

Fly lines aren’t cheap. RestorLine gives you a way to repair loops, coatings, or even fully severed lines without replacing the whole thing.

Field-repair potential–if damage happens mid-trip, having a kit in your bag means you can patch things quickly, instead of fishing around problems.

Environmentally friendly–less waste, fewer lines tossed for minor damage.

Quality of repairs–strong, clean welds that, at least so far, perform as well as factory construction.

What to Watch Out For

Tool requirement–you’ll need a small heat gun (open flames are a no-go). No power = no repair, so backcountry use is limited.

Durability & Aesthetics

Time will tell how repaired sections hold up. They may feel a little different through the guides or show more wear after heavy use.

Bottom Line

RestorLine takes the hassle out of fly line repair.

It won’t save every beat-up line in your drawer, but if you fish hard and hate wasting money or just like keeping good gear alive longer, it’s a tool worth having.

Check out their products today: ReLine ($25), ReLOOP ($25), LineSPLICE ($40).

From the manufacturer: “RestorLine has two primary product lines supporting fly lines sizes 3-6 and 7-10 weight. Whether you’re fishing for trout in a mountain stream, or casting for bonefish on the flats, there is a RestorLine product to repair your fly line and get you quickly back on the water.”
